Behold the Green-winged Teal

December 31, 2020

Behold the Green-winged Teal
Buzzing through the twisting witch fingers of the leafless Bur oak and hedge apple limbs scratching at the predawn horizon, a dozen green-winged teal and a lone mallard splashed into our stock pond in SE Kansas. The hens announced their arrival with their shrill quack, answered in turn by the drake greenhead who bellowed in comparison to his diminutive cousins. Shooting light was still ten minutes away. Of course it was. This was classic greenwing behavior no matter where I’ve… Read More »

About Breathable Waders for Duck Hunters in Florida Sportsman Magazine

About Breathable Waders for Duck Hunters in Florida Sportsman Magazine
Last September I posted about a proposed switch to breathable waders. The experiment has been a rousing success. I was so much happier sporting them during the 2019 September season while wading waist-deep in a Central Florida lake, kayaking across STA-2 before Christmas, and slogging through the mud and oysters of the Nature Coast in January. I’ll never go back to Neoprene unless I’m in another state whose climate forces such decisions. Not that I have anything against Big Neoprene,… Read More »

December 16, 2020

How to Avoid Sundowning Spikes. Lessons from a Chronic Sufferer
“The term ‘sundowning’ refers to a state of confusion occurring in the late afternoon and spanning into the night. Sundowning can cause a variety of behaviors, such as confusion, anxiety, aggression or ignoring directions.” – Mayo Clinic Found the perfect medical term to diagnose those in Hunting Camp who routinely shoot spikes and smaller deer, especially in the evenings. This malady afflicts a good hunting buddy of mine, Tim. And maybe me. Tim calls Pennsylvania home while I reside in central Florida.… Read More »

There’s No Time to Kill but Fortunately Plenty of Deer – My Son’s First Whitetail

December 14, 2020

There’s No Time to Kill but Fortunately Plenty of Deer – My Son’s First Whitetail
“He that can have patience can have what he will.” – Benjamin Franklin The two-hour evening sit had worn thin on my twin nine-year-olds. What was once an adventure with both children hunting together with me for the first time had degraded, in their eyes, into out-and-out parenting as I begged them to sit still, stop kicking the sides of stand, and speak in whispers. Even the seven longbeards hanging out and gobbling weren’t entertaining any longer. Cile wasn’t in… Read More »
