Bow Hunting Kansas: Grunt Calling to Tag an Old Tank of a Buck

October 2, 2019

Deer hunting in Kansas when another cold front is forecast to pass over. The temperatures are dropping and the barometer is climbing higher than normal for that time of year. With that passing front, the wind now is out of the east again. Heath had hung a Summit stand back during August to hunt for these exact circumstances. It’s mid-October, 2015. They know they have some good bucks in the area, but they’re just not moving very good right now. There is a good deer trail coming through, up out of a draw, going up the ridge making kind of a funnel. So, there’s acorns everywhere right in the middle of the timber, basically, so Heath is just hoping to catch deer moving through. He feels that likelihood is probably pretty slim, so he’ll be happy to get a couple of big mature does. The sun was starting to set when Heath heard leaves crunching in the distance. Then he heard a grunt from the same area. With daylight fading, Heath decides to get his grunt call and give a few soft grunts – hoping whatever he heard would close the distance and check him out.Fifteen minutes later, Heath spots a large bodied deer headed their way. Heath recognizes the mature buck. It’s a big bodied eight-pointer they’ve seen during years past. It’s certainly appears he’s looking for the source of those grunts. If the buck stays on that trail, he’ll pass in front of Heath and Lindsey at about 25 yards. Watch to see how this deer hunt plays out!

At GrowingDeer.tv we’re all about showing hunters what we are doing each week in the field as we work on our Proving Grounds and others to have better deer hunting! Our hunting strategies can work if hunting public or private land. Our farm has wild, free-ranging deer. If we can grow big antlers on these tough Ozark Mountain bucks, you can too! Good wildlife management tactics, deer management, and food plots with regenerative ag techniques that build better soils! Watch our weekly episodes to see what we’re doing, the advice that Dr. Grant Woods (Ph.D Wildlife Biologist) has to share along the way.
