Michigan Buck Self Video: Adapting to Changing Conditions on a Small Property

December 10, 2019

On the final day of early archery deer hunting season in Lenawee County Michigan, I was forced to change my game plan for ending the season. On November 11th my neighbors had tracked a buck right through my sanctuary and into the travel corridor, which is the deer funnel where I killed the number one buck in Michigan last year in the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan crossbow category. I was hoping to end the early archery season there, but had to change my plans because the property had been corrupted by the recent human activity. So I moved to the north travel corridor on my property, which serves as an alternate deer funnel between food and bedding around a reed canary grass field. I watched a shooter buck for about 3 hours, seeing him several times about 100-150 yards away. After sitting in my elevated deer stand for about 6.5 hours, I finally elected to still hunt my way upwind to the area he was working. After I got my camera and other gear packed, I saw a young buck crashing through the thick hinge cut area about 30 yards from my stand. I pulled my camera out of my bag to video him, when I saw the larger buck coming behind him. I scramble to get my camera on its mount, and in doing so spooked the young buck, who ran away to the west. The older buck came behind him and turned towards me, presumably to challenge whoever scared the young buck away. It was a fatal mistake. Adapting to changing conditions is absolutely critical on a small property. In this case, it would have been futile to hunt the deer funnel I originally expected to be hunting. I could see the area from the alternate stand, and confirmed that not a single deer used the long food plot along the creek, or used the travel corridor that runs along the creek. This marks the first of many hunts in or in view of that area, and the first time I have not seen deer using that food plot, confirming that the area had been ruined for hunting due to all the human scent laid down there 3 days earlier.
