I hunted gray squirrels and red squirrels during October in New York with a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun. Squirrels are one of the easier fall-weather small game animals to hunt in New York, but I also hunt other small game, including cottontail rabbit, pheasant, ruffed grouse, turkey, and snowshoe hare. I’ll be working on making more small game videos in the future.
Considering how smart the squirrels are where I was hunting, I think this hunt couldn’t have been much more successful. I ended up limiting out on pressured gray squirrels in half a day, and I also ended up shooting a bonus red squirrel. I was using game loads and target loads with size 4 and size 6 shot in the shotgun. These squirrels were running through, peering from, and sitting in separate woodlots and edges, where I ended up shooting them. I butchered all of these squirrels, saved the meat to eat, and I also saved the tails.
